On 7 February 2026, in Esmeraldas (Esmeraldas), police engaged in an armed confrontation with a suspect in the Las Orquideas neighborhood, 26 de Junio sector. Police officers pursued several suspects through the neighborhood until one of them pointed a weapon at the officers, who responded and killed the man. At the scene, authorities seized a firearm, a toy gun, and an intimidating pamphlet from a criminal gang. Residents of the area protested the actions of police. 1 fatality.
