10 dead, including suspect, following shooting in Tumbler Ridge
Shelter in place lifted for the community and surrounding areas, RCMP says no further risk to public

Police have confirmed 10 people are dead following a shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., about 176 kilometres north east of Prince George, on Tuesday.

An active shooter alert was issued at 3:15 p.m. MT by RCMP, covering a large area, including Chetwynd and Dawson Creek. Residents were advised to stay indoors and shelter in place. That alert was lifted at 6:45 p.m. MT.

RCMP confirmed at the time that they were responding to an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

Police later said that 10 people had been found dead following the incident, including the shooter. Six people were found dead inside the school, while another died on the way to the hospital. Two more people were found dead at a home police believe is connected to the shooting.

Police said there is no ongoing risk to the public, but members of the RCMP Major Crime Unit are investigating.

"This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift co-operation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” North District Chief Supt. Ken Floyd wrote in a statement.

"Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the co-operation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation."

According to the 2021 census, Tumbler Ridge has a population of about 2,400.
