Bacalar, Q.R. — One criminal gang member was killed and another wounded Monday in a shootout with the Mexican military. Navy personnel were shot at Monday afternoon while responding to a citizen report of armed men.

The armed men were seen in the town of Limones traveling in a white vehicle. The citizen who made the report said the men appeared to be threatening someone possibly for the intention of kidnapping them.

Military personnel were sent to the area around 2:00 p.m. in search of the white car in response to that report. When they located the described vehicle and began a pursuit, they were fired upon. Mexican military personnel fired back, killing one man and injuring a second.

The FGE (Fiscalía General del Estado) said they have started an investigation into the exchange of gunfire between the Mexican Navy and the criminal gang members.

“The Quintana Roo State Attorney General (FGE) reports that an investigation has been opened following the events that occurred in the town of Limones, in southern Quintana Roo.

“According to initial investigations, members of the Mexican Navy responded to a citizen’s report alerting them that the occupants of a white Volkswagen were allegedly threatening a person with firearms, possibly with the intention of kidnapping them.

“While pursuing the vehicle, the naval personnel were fired upon and they returned fire in accordance with established protocols.

“As a result of these events, one person was killed and another was arrested. Two firearms and doses of suspected narcotics were seized at the scene.

“Members of the Mexican Navy who participated in the incident were unharmed. The State Attorney General’s Office and members of the Interinstitutional Group continue with the necessary procedures to clarify the facts and determine responsibilities, in accordance with the law.”

Reports indicate that the two gang members were part of the Caborca Cartel. The gang member killed at the scene has been identified as Adrián “N”, who was known among residents.

The man in police custody has been named as 36 year old Jorge “V” from the city of Chetumal.

During the operation, authorities seized two firearms and a 2014 Volkswagen Gol as well as a set of stolen license plates belonging to a 2017 Mazda car. The small town of Limones is located within the municipality of Bacalar.
