On 16 January 2026, in Machala (El Oro), two unidentified armed individuals riding a motorcycle killed a security guard in a drive-by shooting in the 18 de Octubre neighborhood. The perpetrators directly shot the victim while he was seated, fled the scene, and later exchanged gunfire with police during a pursuit before being intercepted and arrested. The authorship and motivation are unknown. 1 fatality.
