On 16 January 2026, the Popular Mobilization Forces clashed with ISIL militants near a security checkpoint in the western desert areas of Al Anbar province (coded as Ar Rutba city, Al Anbar). The PMF fired a barrage of light and medium weapons at a group of ISIL militants traveling in a four-wheel-drive vehicle that was attempting to approach security positions. The militants withdrew. Following the incident, the PMF raided the incident site and conducted a search operation for the militants. The PMF also reinforced its positions in the area. Casualties unknown.
