On 16 January 2026, Nigerian troops engaged ISWAP fighters in a firefight while repelling an attack on the Army base in Azir (Damboa, Borno). Ground troops were supported by the Air Force and struck the militia with missiles, killing several. ISWAP fired an RPG, damaging a military vehicle. The troops recovered a 60mm mortar tube, mortar bombs, locally fabricated explosives, heavy machine gun rounds, and hundreds of rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition. Unspecified number of fatalities coded as 10.
