On 14 January 2026, a wildlife ranger opened fire at 2 police officers and a motorcycle rider in Virungani (Kinango, Kwale), following an altercation over a gift of two goats for Christmas (other sources mention over claimed 100 shilling bribe from the rider). 1 officer was killed, while his colleague and the rider sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. The ranger then died due to suicide. The rider later died as a result of the injuries while in the hospital.
