On 12 January 2026, Taliban forces clashed with an IS militant in the center of Guzera city, Herat, resulting in the killing of one Taliban member and the IS militant. The Taliban stated that they killed an IS suicide bomber before he reached his target to carry out an explosion targeting the deputy commander of the Taliban air forces, and claimed that no other individuals were harmed in the incident. One source reported that the IS attacker was a former Taliban member who had been dismissed from his position, had unsuccessfully attempted several times to rejoin the group, and later joined IS to carry out a revenge suicide attack against Taliban.
