On January 28, a 150-strong military column from Battalion No. 707 under the junta’s No. 3 Military Operations Command advanced into territory controlled by anti-junta forces in Chauk Township. At around 11:25 a.m., resistance forces ambushed the troops with landmines, killing and injuring many soldiers.
Shortly afterward, around 11:40 a.m., another battle broke out between resistance fighters and the same column. The junta troops reportedly suffered further casualties, including a major, and were forced to retreat while firing heavy artillery for cover.
During their withdrawal, the soldiers set fire to five civilian homes in Thein Kan Village.
