An Army team recovered 23 unexploded explosive ordnance in Davao City in the southern Philippines, the military has said.A technical inspection team from the Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Battalion Support Command identified the recovered items as 32-kilogram Type 99, No. 3, Mark 3 bombs.
The team reported on Tuesday that the bombs, which were recovered on Jan. 24, were among the types used by the Japanese military during the second world war.Despite their age and visible corrosion, the explosives were assessed as still posing a serious threat to nearby residents and the surrounding community.
Following the discovery, the EOD team immediately cordoned off the area and implemented strict safety protocols to prevent any accidental detonation during the extraction process.
The recovered bombs were subsequently transported to a secure facility, where they will undergo proper disposal and eventual destruction in accordance with established military procedures.Japan occupied the Philippines from early 1942 until 1945 during World War II. Vintage bombs have been discovered in many parts of the country in recent years, including in Metro Manila.
