Undefined Explosive Device (UED) event in Västerås, Öster Mälarstrand area, Sweden on Fri 30th January 2026

An explosion has occurred in a stairwell in an apartment building on Öster Mälarstrand in Västerås. Several police patrols and a police helicopter are on site.

– It is believed to be a minor explosion with minor material damage. There is no information about any injuries, says Stefan Larsson, police spokesman.

The explosion is said to have occurred at 6:40 p.m. Several members of the public contacted the police, who are now on site with several patrols. A police helicopter is also in the air during the ongoing operation.

The police say it was a minor explosion with minor material damage to the property. There are no reports of injuries. The area around the property is cordoned off.

– Intensive work is now underway at the scene to identify any suspected perpetrator, and at the same time we are interviewing members of the public to collect information, says Stefan Larsson.

The police have launched a preliminary investigation into public danger and a serious violation of the Act on Flammable and Explosive Goods.

The location is still cordoned off pending a technical investigation, the police write on their website.

At 9:30 p.m., the police announced that the technical investigation had begun, and that the cordoned off area had been reduced.
