IS-Mozambique (ISMP) claims to have fired mortar shells at a Mozambican naval patrol approaching Sona Island, situated approximately 20km off the coast of Mocimboa da Praia. The insurgent group has seized control of several islands in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, leveraging these positions as natural bastions against military offensives.

ISMP has become the second Islamic State province to field an effective naval force, following the precedent set by ISWAP (West Africa Province). Both groups utilize boats to ambush government forces and execute so-called amphibious assaults on coastal army positions.
