Farmer arrested over shooting of herdsman, killing of cow in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 62-year-old man over the shooting of a herdsman and the killing of one of his cows in Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred off Japara Area of Ijebu-Igbo, where a dispute over grazing on a farm escalated into violence.

According to the sources, detectives visited the scene on Jan. 25 at about 7:30 a.m. and arrested the suspect, Emmanuel Savior, who allegedly admitted to firing a locally made firearm at the herdsman after an argument over cattle grazing on his farmland.

“The suspect claimed he had warned the herdsman to stop grazing on his farm, but when the warning was ignored, the situation degenerated. 

He ran back to his camp, returned with a Dane gun and shot at the herdsman, injuring him, and also shot one of the cows, which died,” the sources said.

They added that the injured herdsman was rushed to hospital and is responding to treatment, while the firearm used in the incident has been recovered.

Photographs of the scene and the dead animal were taken for investigation purposes, the sources said, noting that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Abeokuta, for discreet investigation.

The police urged residents to resolve disputes through lawful means and report disagreements to appropriate authorities to prevent loss of life and property.
