An explosion occurred in central Västerås during the night of Tuesday. Parts of Bondtorget have been cordoned off.

The police received several calls about a loud bang in central Västerås at four o'clock on Tuesday morning.

– I can confirm that there has been a detonation and a police operation is underway, said Sebastian Jonsson, commander at the police command center, at five o'clock.

The police write on their website that they found traces of an explosion outside a gate belonging to a building for both housing and business. No one was injured.

At just after 7 o'clock, Magnus Jansson Klarin at Police Region Mitt tells us that they are waiting for personnel and daylight to be able to conduct a technical examination at the scene.

– We have begun gathering information at the scene, and right now we cannot say more about the case than that, says Magnus Jansson Klarin.

Parts of Bondtorget have been cordoned off. Molly Dahlberg, receptionist at Stadshotellet, was one of those who heard the explosion:

– I was awake and heard a very loud bang, so I went outside when the emergency services arrived, they were there within a few minutes.

The police have launched a preliminary investigation into public danger and a violation of the Act on Flammable and Explosive Goods.

During the night of January 1, the same area was cordoned off after an alarm about a dangerous object. It was a security guard who saw the object and alerted the police. On site, the police were able to determine that an object had burned and that there was soot on the facade.

Whether the events are connected to each other is nothing that Magnus Jansson Klarin can comment on:

– Of course, we always look at previous events and whether they are connected to each other, but it is still too early to say, says Magnus Jansson Klarin.
