Missile event in Kyiv, CHP-5 Substation area, Ukraine on Sat 24th January 2026
24th January 2026
One of the missiles used to attack Kyiv yesterday was a modified S-400 surface-to-surface missile. Two of these missiles were used, both of which attempted to hit the CHP-5 power plant. Both were intercepted by Patriot air defences. CHP-5 suffered no damage, and its power generation has since been at least partially restored.
Despite some reports of these missiles being decoys, I believe they are equipped with warheads. The usage of modified surface-to-air missile in a surface-to-surface mode is not a new phenomenon.
In October 2025, multiple S-400 missiles struck a target south of Sumy City. However, Russia usually uses modified S-300, and they generally strike targets in border areas of Sumy and Kharkiv Oblast.
