On 9 January 2026, in Borbon (Eloy Alfaro, Esmeraldas), police arrested two suspected members of the criminal group Los Chechenos following an armed clash during targeted raids. Officers were met with gunfire and responded, wounding and detaining both suspects. There were no fatalities.
