On 9 January 2026, the National Security Service clashed with two armed suspects on the road connecting Al Zubair and Safwan districts (coded as Al-Zubair city, Al Basrah), during an arrest attempt. The suspects were driving a pickup truck without license plates. One of the suspects opened fire and was killed by the security forces while the other one was detained. The NSS seized a hand grenade, an AK-47 with two magazines, and around 200 grams of Crystal meth. 1 fatality.
