On 8 January 2026, in San Benito, Peten, two armed men on a motorcycle parked outside a shop and one of them dismounted the vehicle, entered the shop and shot and killed a teacher and Rector of the University of San Carlos, while the victim was shopping. Subsequently, the perpetrator fled the scene along with his accomplice. One hypothesis on the attack claims that it was politically-motivated and linked to the upcoming university's election. The police is also investigating whether the attack might be linked to extortion, personal motives, the victim's teaching profession, or potential connection with criminal groups. 1 fatality.
