On 8 January 2026, in Machala (Machala, El Oro), an unknown number of armed assailants wearing police uniforms forcefully entered a home in 18 de Octubre neighborhood, and fatally shot four family members before causing an explosion with a gas cylinder. The home caught fire, and the four victims were found incinerated and with gunshot wounds. One of the victims had a prior criminal record for drug trafficking, and two were minors. A survivor claimed that she had been receiving death threats from a criminal organization. No arrests were made. 4 fatalities.
