On 8 January 2026, in Joao Pessoa (Paraiba), military police officers exchanged fire with an unidentified armed suspect on the Paulo Afonso community. The officers were conducting a routine patrol when they spotted the man, who was carrying a bag. Police say that the man fired against them, leading to an armed clash. He was shot and killed. Residents, however, claim that the man was not armed and that there was no armed clash. Police seized a firearm and ammunition 1 fatality.
