On 7 January 2026, Syrian police forces and the General Intelligence Services arrested an ISIL leader who is the military emir of Wilayat al-Sham for ISIL, during a security operation in Aleppo city. The arrest followed surveillance of his movements and a raid on the location where he was hiding, during which he was detained without casualties and found in possession of a suicide belt and weapons.
