On 5 January 2026, overnight, JNIM clashed with the Niger army during a multilayered attack against military and government positions on the outskirts of Torodi (Torodi, Tillaberi). The militants claimed to have bombed military barracks with mortar shells and taken control of two military posts temporarily. Other sources mentioned that 7 people were killed, including Captain Chaibou Mali, the prefect of Torodi. Three vehicles of the national guard were looted, and two previously arrested militants were freed. The army claimed to have launched an air-land operation after the attack, leading to the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of three AK-rifles.
