On 3 January 2026, in Caracas - Libertador (Distrito Capital), the United States military carried out airstrikes against several locations within the Fuerte Tiuna military complex, including the entrance gate and several barracks, the Cagigal Observatory, the headquarters of the Bolivarian Militia General Command, the 4F Mountain Barracks, and a radar station in the Altos de Irapa sector. A residential house near Altos de Irapa suffered damage. Initial unconfirmed estimates of fatalities from several strikes on military bases in the Caracas metropolitan area range between at least 74 and 100 military personnel, including Cuban security forces. It was confirmed that 32 Cuban military officers died, and 39 Venezuelan military officers have been identified as deceased. This was part of the coordinated strikes that day across several locations in Venezuela, which concluded with the arrest and extraction of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife (coded separately). According to AP, a US official speaking on condition of anonymity stated that seven US soldiers were injured and 5 of them had already returned to duty. The Venezuelan Doctors Network reported at least 90 people injured by the bombs who were admitted to hospitals in Caracas.
