On 3 January 2026, military units fired on a vehicle transporting unspecified smuggled goods and killed 1 of its occupants in the buffer zone of Tiyarat (Remada, Tataouine). The Ministry of Defense stated that the soldiers first issued sound and light signals ordering the vehicle to stop, then fired warning shots into the air, and finally opened fire to the right and left of the vehicle. Upon inspecting it, they found one unarmed person, a Tunisian citizen, dead.
