On 1 January 2026, in Montego Bay, Saint James, in the early morning, police and military forces shot and killed two armed individuals as part of a joint operation aimed at putting an end to illegal gun salutes during the New Year's celebrations in Brown's Lane (Granville neighborhood). According to police, the armed individuals challenged them with firearms, prompting them to open fire. The officers seized an AK-47 rifle at the scene. Four people were injured during the shooting, including a woman and a girl who was sleeping at bed. She died hours later. Residents took to the streets blaming the police for the deaths and denying the official version of the facts (coded separately). 3 fatalities, 3 injured.
