In Sagaing Region’s Salingyi Township, in the village of Main, local residents report that troops from the military council stationed at the polling station designated for election sub-section (3) opened fire with heavy weapons into the surrounding area.
At around 10 a.m. on January 23, artillery shells—reportedly 120 mm in size—were fired toward Pholwin Taung, where internally displaced people (IDPs) were sheltering. Three IDPs were injured in the attack, according to a local source. The military council had planned to open a polling station inside the compound of the YMC-Myanmar Company in Main, and troops from the council were stationed there.
