Steven Meyer, 66, and his wife were shot and wounded in their home on Sunday. The suspect has not yet been identified or located. A manhunt is underway.

They approached the door when suddenly, a gunshot rang out. An American judge and his wife were targeted in what appears to be an assassination attempt at their home in Lafayette, Indiana , according to numerous American media outlets, including the New York Post . Judge Steven Meyer, who presides over the Tippecanoe 2 Superior Court, and his wife were shot around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 18.

The suspect is actively being sought
According to initial findings of the investigation, the suspect went to the couple's home and knocked on the door, explaining that he had their dog with him. As he approached to open the door, a gunshot suddenly pierced it, wounding both people. Judge Meyer, 66, was hit in the arm, and his wife, Kimberly Meyer, was wounded in the hip. They were rushed to the hospital and are now in stable condition, but both remain hospitalized.

“Judge Steve Meyer of Tippecanoe Superior Court No. 2 is a longtime colleague and friend. I am deeply grateful that he and his wife, Kim, are alive after being shot in their home. Their health and well-being are my primary concern,” said Loretta Rush, Chief Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court. “I am concerned about the safety of all our judges. As you work to peacefully resolve more than a million cases a year, you must not only feel safe, but actually be safe,” she added.

The suspect, who fled immediately after the incident, has still not been identified or located. A joint investigation by the Lafayette Police Department, the Indiana State Police, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office, the West Lafayette Police Department, the Tippecanoe County District Attorney's Office, and the FBI is ongoing.
