On 28 December 2025, Algerian border guards crossed into Mauritanian territory in the country's northeast near the Algerian border, opened fire on Mauritanian artisanal gold miners, seized their equipment, and assaulted several miners, causing injuries but no fatalities. Algerian gendarmerie units also arrested several Mauritanian gold miners who had crossed into Algerian territory near the border area, confiscating three four-wheel-drive vehicles and mining equipment, after the miners ignored prior warnings against crossing the border despite the discovery of gold-bearing zones straddling both sides of the frontier.
