On 26 December 2025, in Machala (El Oro), two unidentified individuals riding a motorcycle shot at police officers on a street near the Machala IESS Hospital. This prompted a shootout. The officers were following the armed individuals during surveillance operations. Upon noticing they were being followed, the individuals opened fire on them. The individuals abandoned a 9 mm firearm. There were no fatalities.
