On 26 December 2025, in Zapotillo (Zapotillo, Loja), military personnel exchanged gunfire with suspected illegal miners after they attempted to evade a checkpoint and fired at security forces during a pursuit. The military repelled the attack and seized a vehicle, mineralized material, and ammunition. There were no fatalities.
