SAA event in Western Visayas, Kabankalan area, Philippines on Tue 23rd December 2025

On 23 December 2025, a woman peasant leader was shot dead by unidentified assailants inside her bedroom at her home in Barangay Camansi, Kabankalan City (Negros Occidental, Western Visayas). She was the widow of a farmer leader who was captured and killed by soldiers in November 2022 in the same barangay along with a National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) peace consultant poet (coded separately). Human rights group Karapatan said she was under military surveillance since her husband's death and was repeatedly asked to admit to being an NPA member (red-tagged). She was a member of the farmers' group Pammaca, advocating for farmers' rights and land acquisition in the barangay. Karapatan said the attack was conducted under the government's anti-insurgency program and was part of a pattern of attacks against peasant leaders and their families in the Negros Island Region following the implementation of Memorandum Order No. 32 that ordered the deployment of additional military and police forces to the region.
