On 23 December 2025, in Playas (Guayas), police officers clashed with two armed individuals described as hitmen after pursuing them following a shooting. Earlier, the hitmen, who were riding a motorcycle, had opened fire on a man walking at the intersection of Pedro Menendez Gilbert Avenue and 12 de Octubre Street, in the city center. The victim was wearing clothes similar to a school uniform. The attackers fled immediately after killing him, prompting a police pursuit that escalated into a shootout in which one of the hitmen was killed. The other suspect abandoned the motorcycle and fled into nearby mangroves to avoid arrest. 1 fatality.
