On 22 December 2025, in Camilo Ponce Enriquez (Azuay), unidentified armed subjects shot and injured a mining businessman while he was traveling in a van on the road to the Villa River. The military was conducting an operation in the area on the day of the attack due to the presence of criminal groups linked to illegal mining. There were no fatalities.
