On 21 December 2025, in Santa Maria del Toachi (coded to Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas), a man shot and killed four people at kilometer 8 on the road to Quito. When the victims arrived at their destination after attending a christening, he blocked their car with his own vehicle, stepped out, and shot them. One of the people inside the car survived. Two of the victims had records for drug trafficking, and one was a pregnant woman. 4 fatalities.
