On 19 December 2025, Ukraine claimed it attacked a Russian 'shadow fleet' tanker with aerial drones in international waters southeast of Crete (Libyan Sea), in the first such strike in the Mediterranean Sea since Moscow's full-scale invasion nearly four years ago. The vessel - the Qendil - was empty when it was struck by drones and sustained critical damage.
