On 19 December 2025, dozens of Syrian army fighters (former Ahrar al Sharqiyah faction) launched an armed attack on a General Security headquarters in Afrin city in the northern Aleppo countryside in an attempt to free detained faction commander 'Abu Yusuf al-Mayadeen'. The commander is a prominent figure in Ahrar al Sharqiyah faction, and has been accused of serious human rights abuses, including the seizure of civilian properties. General Security forces repelled the attack, and the assailants withdrew. Casualties unknown.
