Other MoA event in Gambela, Achuwa area, Ethiopia on Thu 18th December 2025
18th December 2025
On 18 December 2025, for a second day, Anyuak and Nuer ethnic militias (both sides supported by South Sudanese Agnewak and Nuer ethnic groups who entered Ethiopia as refugees) clashed in the vicinity of Kule Refugee Camp in Achuwa, Itang Special (Itang, Gambella), and at least 20 people were killed in the two-day conflict (coded separately). Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said it activated a mass-casualty response on the evening of 17 December at its facility in Kule Refugee Camp, where nearly 50 wounded people were treated within the first 48 hours, including 19 in severe condition. The violence escalated following the killing of the Gambella City police chief on 16 December. Regional and former security officials said the violence is ethnically motivated and that divisions within the security apparatus have undermined efforts to contain the crisis, raising fears of further escalation. 20 fatalities split between the two dates (17 and 18 December), coded as 10 for this event.
