On 16 December 2025, an Al Shabaab remote-controlled explosive detonated, targeting security officers (likely police officers, police reservists, and military officers for their involvement in Al Shabaab operations) traveling between Mt. Kamole and Shangaani (also known as Ishakani, Lamu East, and Lamu). Al Shabaab claimed to have killed at least 1 officer during the incident.
