On 16 December 2025, about 40 suspected Al Shabaab militants engaged in an armed clash with police officers in El Wak (Mandera South, Mandera), after the militants attempted to attack a Chinese workers' camp. The attack was initiated with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), followed by an exchange of gunfire from both sides. There were no casualties, and 8 vehicles, including a police vehicle, and property of unknown value were destroyed during the incident.
