Early morning January 16, around 200 junta troops from Infantry Battalions 111 and 120 based in Wuntho entered from Nyaung Kine Village, firing into the bustling market. One male vendor was shot dead, many civilians trapped, and market stalls destroyed.

The spokesperson said, "Junta started column operations from January 15 evening. They hit Chinthe Boke Khone market early January 16. One vendor died from gunfire as troops stormed in. Some were trapped yesterday but freed today. It's a big rural market since Kawlin town fell — they seem jealous of the activity. Nearby troops remain; yesterday's column is still in Taung Maw Village."
