On January 14, a key shooter accused in the murder of former Aam Admi Party (AAP) Sarpanch (head of gram Panchayat) Jarmal Singh died after sustaining bullet injuries during a Police encounter in Amritsar, reports The Indian Express. Sukhraj Singh alias Gunga, linked to the Prabh Dasuwal gang, was in Police custody during a recovery operation in the Vallah area when two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly opened fire to free him. During the ensuing chaos, Gunga allegedly attempted to snatch the service pistol of an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) and was shot in the scuffle. He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Constable Varun Kumar was injured, while the attackers escaped. Police fired multiple rounds to counter the attack. A .30 bore pistol was recovered. FIR No. 10 dated January 14 was registered at Maqboolpura Police Station under various sections of the BNS and Arms Act. Gunga was facing four criminal cases, including the 2024 murder of another Sarpanch in Tarn Taran District.
