A vital bridge over the Kurram River in North Waziristan’s Shewa tehsil was destroyed on Wednesday after unidentified attackers planted explosives beneath the structure, severing a crucial transport link in the volatile district.

Local sources said a powerful blast in the early morning hours shattered the bridge, disrupting road connectivity between Shewa and key towns including Miranshah, Bannu and adjoining regions.

The explosion, heard from several miles away, sparked fear among residents and added to concerns about deteriorating law and order in the area.Police and security officials cordoned off the site soon after the incident and launched an investigation.

Initial assessments suggest a significant amount of explosive material was used. Authorities have also sent a report to senior officials regarding reconstruction plans and temporary alternate routes. The bridge’s destruction is expected to cause major hardship for local communities, as the route had long served as an essential corridor for students, traders, government employees, patients and daily commuters.

Its loss has also hindered access to healthcare, routine commercial supplies and relief-related movement, forcing residents to rely on longer and more difficult paths.Local sources noted that security convoys occasionally used the bridge, raising suspicions that the attack may have been aimed at undermining stability in the region. Tribal elders condemned the blast as a “heinous and cowardly act” that primarily harms civilians who have already endured years of conflict. Political representatives also voiced alarm, urging the government to strengthen security and protect critical infrastructure.

Attacks targeting infrastructure have increased in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recent months. In December, unknown assailants destroyed a link bridge in Bannu district, while multiple bombings last month targeted schools and public facilities in North Waziristan. Officials said a comprehensive investigation into Wednesday’s attack is underway.
