On 13 December 2025, a man entered a classroom at the School of Engineering and opened fire on the campus of Brown University in Providence (Rhode Island). Two students were killed and nine people were injured. These students appeared to be targeted at random. The perpetrator, who was a Portuguese national, also fatally shot a Portuguese MIT physics professor at his home in Brookline (Massachusetts) two days later. Authorities confirmed that he had studied at the same Portuguese university in the same program as the MIT professor. The perpetrator was later found dead by self-inflicted wounds in New Hampshire. He had previously been a graduate student at Brown. In the aftermath of the incident, investigators said that they had not identified any writings, known criminal history or clear motive.
