Nigerian Army rescues 18 victims from sea pirates off Cameroon waters

By: Zagazola Makama

Troops of the Nigerian Army troops of 13 Brigade have rescued 18 persons, including two infants, from suspected sea pirates following the hijack of a passenger boat en route from Nigeria to Cameroon around Kombo 4 Fishing Port, Cameroon.

Zagazola Makama report that the incident occurred at about 11:20 a.m. on Jan. 11, after a distress call reported that the pirates, operating in two speed boats and one wooden boat, had intercepted the passenger vessel.

The sources said troops swiftly responded and pursued the criminals, leading to an exchange of fire on the waterways. During the engagement, one of the pirates’ speed boats, powered by a 15-horsepower engine, capsized, forcing the attackers to abandon the abducted passengers.

“All the victims, comprising 16 adults and two infants, were rescued safely, while the sea pirates fled into the creeks,” the sources said.

The troops were said to have continued aggressive patrols and dominance of the waterways after the rescue to forestall further criminal activities in the area.

It was confirmed that ammunition was expended during the operation, including five rounds of 7.62mm NATO and four rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
