Three industrial plants were targeted early Sunday, January 11, by suspected jihadists affiliated with al-Qaeda. These plants produce cement, lime, and plaster in the Kayes region of western Mali . The heavily armed assailants arrived on motorcycles. Sources indicate there were between 150 and 200 of them. Divided into two groups, they attacked and burned the three factories. The filmed scenes were shared on social media. A local elected official visited the site after the jihadists left. He described a chaotic situation: burning bags of cement, destroyed buildings, and considerable damage. " Everything has to be rebuilt, " another resident of Bafoulabé told us. He added that " the jihadists no longer want the factories to operate ." According to our information, at least four people were abducted from one of the three sites attacked. Last July, jihadists had already attacked factories in the same region. Foreign employees, including Indians, were kidnapped. They are still being held by the armed group affiliated with al-Qaeda.
