Police shot dead five suspects during a gun battle in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday morning, 8 January 2026.

The shootout took place in the Bester area. Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda told SABC News that officers believed the suspects had been committing murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.

Netshiunda said the group had been committing crimes in the area for a long time and had been terrorising residents.He said police knew the identities of the suspects and described the operation as breaking the gang’s stronghold.Officers recovered firearms at the scene.

Third shootout this week

Thursday’s incident marks the third deadly shootout involving police in KZN this week.

On Wednesday, 7 January 2026, police killed two suspects during a gun battle in Amaoti, Inanda.The pair were wanted in connection with the shooting of four people in Ezimangweni, which left two people dead and one injured.

Netshiunda said police had earlier arrested five other suspects linked to the Ezimangweni murders. Officers found them in possession of a firearm and a replica gun.

Shooting earlier in the week

On Monday, 5 January 2026, police shot dead two suspects armed with AK47 rifles during a shootout in the Margate policing area, near Uvongo.KZN police spokesperson Captain Ntathu Ndlovu said officers were acting on intelligence about suspects carrying unlicensed firearms.

“Two suspects were fatally wounded when they engaged police in a shootout,” Ndlovu said.
