Shocking assassination in Pascuales, Guayaquil. On December 28, 2025, a gunman entered a Chinese-Ecuadorian restaurant (chifa) on Avenida 28 de Agosto and fatally shot employee Verónica Ferigra Carabalí at point-blank range, in an attack captured on security cameras. The assailant left behind two threatening pamphlets at the scene, with messages reportedly warning "Pay up or die," pointing to an extortion scheme targeting the business. Authorities believe the murder is tied to ongoing turf wars and extortion rackets by organized criminal gangs in the violence-plagued northern district of Guayaquil, where hundreds of homicides have been recorded this year.
