NIGER 🇳🇪 - On Monday, January 5, 2026, the Nigerien Framework for Combating Abuses (CDN) expressed, in a press release, its "deep concern" regarding the transport and storage of nearly 1,000 tons of uranium in Niamey.
🔶 The CDN warns of the harmful effects of yellowcake on public health and the environment, particularly due to its storage at Air Base 101, which is deemed unsuitable for this purpose and located in a densely populated area.
The organization also calls on the Nigerien population to denounce, through all peaceful means, the authorities in power, whom it accuses of endangering public health.
As a reminder, the first trucks transporting uranium arrived in the capital over a month ago, on December 4, 2025.
ℹ️ The CDN (National Defense Council) is a collective bringing together Nigerien civil society leaders, journalists, lawyers, and researchers. Officially launched on September 12, 2025, its objective is to work towards more democratic practices and respect for political rights.
⚠️ A few days earlier, the Patriotic Movement for Liberty and Justice (MPLJ) had also published a statement on the subject, denouncing "a serious threat to public health and national security" and demanding the immediate removal of all radioactive material stored in the capital.
