A federal immigration agent shot and killed a woman Wednesday morning in south Minneapolis after rioters reportedly blocked ICE officers with a car and allegedly attempted to run them over.

Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin called the behavior of the rioters “an act of domestic terrorism.”

The incident occurred at East 34th Street and Portland Avenue in the Powderhorn neighborhood, reported KSTP. City Council Vice President Jamal Osman told KSTP that the woman was shot while inside her vehicle.

Homeland Security confirmed reports of the incident, noting that ICE officers were involved in targeted operations when rioters obstructed their actions, with one individual aggressively using her vehicle in an attempt to harm the officers—a clear act of domestic terrorism. In response, an ICE officer, acting to protect himself and his colleagues, fired defensive shots, resulting in the alleged assailant being hit and later dying.

“This is the direct consequence of constant attacks and demonization of our officers by sanctuary politicians who fuel and encourage rampant assaults on our law enforcement who are facing 1,300% increase in assaults against them and an 8,000% increase in death threats,” Homeland Security added in its post on X.

Dozens of law enforcement officers, including ICE agents, DHS staff, Minneapolis police, and Customs and Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino, converged on the area. 

Aerial footage captured an SUV carrying federal agents using chemical irritants to push through an alley as a growing crowd of angry rioters gathered behind police tape, shouting at responders.

The shooting unfolded days after DHS ramped up immigration efforts in the Twin Cities, deploying over 2,000 ICE agents, including 1,500 focused on enforcement and removals.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the federal presence.
