Russian forces have carried out a drone attack on the Dnipro oil extraction plant owned by the American company Bunge. As a result of the strike, about 300 tons of vegetable oil spilled onto the city’s roadway, says Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov.
The attacks against enterprises with Western capital raise a critical question: how can the international community effectively protect its own investments amid Russia's aggression? How can security guarantees discussed in Europe and the US protect them from potential Russian attacks?
Filatov has strongly condemned the attack, emphasizing that Russian forces are deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure.
“The Russians are bombing purely civilian production facilities, while we pretend these are some abstract ‘industrial enterprises,’” the Dnipro mayor said.
He has stressed that the consequences of the attack are visible to the entire city of over one million residents, not just emergency services.
According to Filatov, municipal services are working under difficult conditions, washing away the oil and covering the road surface with sand and special mixtures.
“Traffic along the Embankment will be impossible for approximately two to three days,” the mayor reports.
He has also asked residents to be understanding.
“When you’re stuck in traffic jams, please don’t swear—say thank you to those working in these conditions. Follow the official city council channels,” Filatov adds.
According to information on Bunge’s website, the Dnipro oil extraction plant is a facility that processes sunflower seeds, featuring fully integrated operations for refining and bottling.
The company also owns a modern, high-tech plant in Mykolaiv, which has been operating since 2016. This facility specializes in processing sunflower seeds and soybeans, producing vegetable oil, lecithins, and meal.
Additionally, Bunge operates an export port terminal through which products are shipped to various countries worldwide, underscoring the global scale of the consequences of the attack.
